Sustainability
Lynch is proudly supporting our customer John F Hunt Regeneration on an innovative environmental project to tackle one of the River Thames' most unusual challenges: the aptly named 'Wet Wipe Island' in west London.
Over many years, a buildup of wet wipes and other plastic debris has formed along a 250-metre stretch of the river near Hammersmith Bridge, creating a thick, congealed sludge that threatens the river's health and local wildlife. Volunteers from the charity Thames21 have been calling for action for years, and the Port of London Authority (PLA), in partnership with Thames Water, has now launched the UK's first large-scale mechanical removal of wet wipes from a river.
Lynch is providing diggers and rake attachments to support the clean-up, using the 'rake and shake' method to carefully loosen debris while minimising harm to any wildlife in the area. Working within the tidal window, we've also provided an on-call fitter to keep the plant operating smoothly and ensure the project runs without delay.
“We love supporting a project that has such a tangible environmental impact. From freeing wildlife to improving river health, it’s the kind of work that reminds us why our expertise in reliable plant hire that is safe and sustainable really matters.”
Merrill Lynch, Joint Managing Director
The clean-up is expected to remove approximately 180 tonnes of wet wipes and plastic debris (the equivalent of 15 double-decker buses) over the next month. Once removed, the waste will be responsibly disposed of to prevent further contamination of the river with microplastics and other pollutants.
This project is a perfect example of why it's so important that we collaborate with customers, authorities, and environmental groups. Lynch is proud to play its part in helping the Thames thrive while supporting John F Hunt Regeneration to deliver a safe and efficient operation.
